ABOUT

Central Island Agricultural Research Institute in Bathubasti, Garacharma P.O, Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India and was established by Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The university was established in 1978. This institute formed with merging the regional stations of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) and Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). This centre is governed by Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

MISSION AND VISION

Vision is to provide sustainable development in agri-horticulture, livestock and fisheries departments. It is in the changing climatic scenario to ensure decent livelihood in the fragile island ecosystem.

Mission is to provide decent livelihood to farm youth from agriculture in a fragile island ecosystem on sustainable manner.

RESEARCH DIVISION

1) Division Of Natural Resource Management

The Division of Natural Resource Management has been involved in development of sustainable resource management strategies or technologies in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. This division was originally formed in 1984 as Division of crop production, soil conservation and water management to direct the issues of concerning crop production, soil and water.

2) Horticulture

The Horticulture & Forestry Division of CARI, Port Blair was formed along with inception of CARI, Port Blair in 1983 to work for the research activities on horticultural and agro-forestry crops for the advancement of this sector as sustainable source of livelihood as preserved in the institute mandate.

3) Field Crop Improvement and Protection

The Division of Field Crop Improvement and Protection, CIARI, Port Blair has been strategically working on basic, and applied aspects of crop improvement and protection for Andaman & Nicobar Island conditions. It should encompass genetic advancement primarily of rice, pulses, oilseeds, maize etc. for the island environment.

4) Division of Animal Science

Regional Laboratory of Indian Veterinary Research Institute for “Animal Disease Surveillance and Control” at Dudh line was amalgamated in the CARI as “Laboratory of Animal Sciences” on 1st September 1978. This section of Animal Sciences was enhanced to “Animal Science Division” in 1982. The division has grown up to a significant livestock and poultry unit with supporting infrastructure for modern science.

5) Division of Fisheries Science

Past 3 decades Fisheries Science Division has its focus on conveying the issues related to aquaculture, capture fisheries resources and impact of environment change on coastal bio-resources.
